General (8)

This FAQ is more for you to answer than for us. If you’re in a room with 50 people (or 100, or 10, or 500), do you really want to go from person to person through the whole crowd? Sometimes yes, of course you do, but much of the time you’re at an event for a particular purpose (or set of purposes).

You want to meet like-minded people, you want to meet people of particular skills, you want to meet people with certain affiliations. Other than asking everyone to carry around a sign, how do you filter out the random from the targeted? What is it worth to you to be able to talk to 10 people with whom you have a high chance of interest instead of 30 where you have no idea?

At its heart, the personal connector is a way to apply a filter to a real-world crowd. In sales parlance, you’re pre-qualifying your in-person leads. In human terms, it helps you figure out who might be more interesting to you to talk to.

It does this while respecting your privacy since your device talks to other devices directly while you’re in the same room, not through some other service such as Facebook.

MiitWell lets you take your iPhone, figure out who is close to you that you might want to talk to, find them, then start a face-to-face conversation.

It does this by taking advantage of the advanced features of your iPhone (or iPod Touch or iPad) to do proximity detection (who is close to you) and create an ad-hoc connection between your device and theirs to share information.

This is how MiitWell protects your privacy (it’s device-to-device, no social network required) and even works places where there is no internet connection at all (it’s device-to-device, so no outside data required either).

A profile is a collection of information about you, provided by you, in a particular category.

Each profile type in MiitWell is designed to encourage a valuable conversation. When you set up your profiles, you can choose from the many available types (with more coming in each update) then customize the profile to suit your particular needs.

Once that profile is available, you choose to broadcast it or not. Only profiles that are actively broadcasting can be seen by other devices in the room. As far as receivers (the other people who may see the information), each broadcasting profile alerts receivers to the broadcast then, as needed, supplies a summary or the profile details to the other device on request.

Letting others find you (broadcasting):

  • Fire up the app and tap Profiles at the bottom (assuming you’ve gone through the tour)
  • Tap the background and choose a profile type from the list. If none of the types jump out at you, pick either General Business or General Personal.
  • Fill in the blanks, take a photo of yourself. Tap “Done” when you’re done.
  • Tap the profile icon. You’ll see the green broadcasting antenna.

As long as you’re somewhere where someone is “listening” (or you have MiitWell installed on multiple iOS devices), you can now be seen! Tap the profile icon again to turn off broadcasting.

Finding others (listening):

  • Fire up the app. If for some reason you’re not already in the Miit! tab, tap it in the bottom bar.
  • Tap the satellite and make sure any of the profile types you’re interested in has a checkmark beside it.
  • Tap done.

That’s it! Any active profiles that are within range will drop into view as they are found. The three ranges of color on the map go from blue (far away or unknown) to the brightest green (closest to you).

Tap a profile icon to get the summary for that profile. If you want to know more, tap the summary; otherwise, tap anywhere else to return to normal.

Profiles are meant to encourage face-to-face connections, not be a full-blown resume or extensive dating description.

By keeping profiles limited (but useful), this makes it quicker and easier to create all the different types of profiles you like as well as making it simpler for the recipients to quickly identify who they want to meet.

While there is real power in letting others find you, sometimes you’re prefer that not to happen.

If you’re not broadcasting any of your profiles (no green antennas), you will not be seen by other MiitWell devices in the room.

Go to the Profiles tab and look for any green antennas. If you see one, tap the profile to stop broadcasting.

If you’re in a crowded room or are “on a mission” (searching for specific types of people or skills), you may want to filter what kinds of profiles show up on your map.

Tap the Satellite dish on the Miit! screen or the Filter button on the bottom tab bar. The profiles with checkmarks are the ones that will show up in your map.

MiitWell is different when it comes to privacy.

Other services will do the matching of you and a prospect by sending your location out to “the internet”, typically using information from sites like Facebook. This exposes you to accidental or intentional usage of location information and other identifying bits in ways that you don’t expect or desire.

MiitWell does all the identification and matching effort locally on your device. If you broadcast one or more profiles, that information stays in the room you’re in. When you set up profiles, the profiles are stored on-device (and wherever you back up your device, of course).

Profiles do not automatically broadcast – you pick and choose which ones are appropriate for the event you’re attending and broadcast (or stop broadcasting) with a tap on the profile in question.
